• The United States is #1 in the world for gun ownership (88 per 100 people).

• The United States is not even in the top 10 in the world for violent crimes (466/100K). For comparison, the United Kingdom, which has strict gun ownership laws, is #1 (2,034/100K people).

• The United States is #28 in the world for gun murders (2.97 per 100K people). In 1994, this rate was 6 per 100K.

• It is illegal to own a weapon that fires bullets in a continuous stream in the United States, unless you are a member of the military and receive special training.

• From 1995-2011, the number of "military-style" rifles in the United States rose by 2.5 million. The murder rate during the same period fell 48% to a 48-year low.

• The following cause more fatalities in the United States than firearms: other weapons (1.5x), unintentional falls (2.2x), drug abuse (2.3x), unintentional poisoning (2.8x), motor vehicle accidents (3x), alcohol abuse (9x), unintentional injuries (10x), medical errors (17x). Knives and other blunt objects kill 8.5x as many people as "military-style" rifles.
